Christmas came a little early this year, as today brought us the leak of J. Cole’s third studio album, 2014 Forrest Hills Drive. The thirteen track LP is named after the road Cole grew up on with his mom until 2003 when the house was foreclosed. The talented MC recently re-purchased the house, making it the first house he has ever bought. One of the things that has always been overlooked with Cole is his production skills. This album should change all that, as Cole produces all of the tracks except for 2, and he has no feature verses throughout the entire project. This is basically all Cole has to offer in one LP, which is all fans could hope for. Right now I’m listening to it the first time through, currently on track 5, and I’m loving everything about it. He opted to release the album without any singles, something that is more or less unheard of in today’s day and age. After a somewhat disappointing first album, where it was obvious Cole tried to fit in with what the music industry wanted him to become, he took a step in the right direction with Born Sinner getting back to his roots, even speaking on his misstep on the track “Let Nas Down”. Born Sinner was personally one of my favorite albums, and I was blown away with what he was able to accomplish. If you know me, you know that Cole is one of my favorite rappers ever, and if I was ever able to come up with a definitive top 10 list, he would probably find himself in the top 5, possibly even in the top 3. So needless to say, I’m pumped for this release and look forward to hearing the rest of it in the next hour or so. Enjoy folks
