This is what the fuck I’m talking about. This is what hip hop needs. I woke up to about 20 text messages from various friends talking about Kendrick Lamar, and I had no idea what was going on. I hopped on HipHopDX real quick and soon found out. In case you live under a rock and haven’t heard this yet today, here is Big Sean, Kendrick Lamar, and Jay Electronica’s new song, “Control”.

Now let me start off by saying that I have never in my life listened to a song featuring a Jay Electronica verse and not been able to completely block out everything else in the world and focus in on Jay’s words of wisdom. But when I first heard Kendrick’s verse, I was so taken back that I couldn’t even remember what Jay spit because he followed Kendrick. I can’t even put into words how much that means for someone who’s as big of a fan of Jay Electronica as I am. But this is what the fuck hip hop should be about. Any talented MC should be striving to be king of the game because that raises the level of competition from everyone else, including yourself. Kendrick isn’t trying to start beef like a lot of people seem to think he is, he’s calling out the rap game for exactly what it has been over the last 10 years, a bunch of girly, club, dumb shit. People started worrying about making money and focused less on making music that matters, perfecting their craft. That’s not to say that there hasn’t been good music in the last 10 years, there has. It certainly doesn’t find its way to the radio too often though, while all the bullshit has no problem making it, and damn near everyone is responsible because most of us embrace it and buy into it. Time for everyone, and I mean EVERYONE out there to step their shit up. Enough is enough with all the bullshit rap. Elevate your music to that next level, never stop striving to be the greatest. Stop settling for a pay check. Can’t wait to see the quality of music that follows in the next year or so.
